Barndominium
Australian steel-frame farmhouse
A 364 m² Colorbond-style shed home on a sloping rural block near Mudgee, NSW: a 266 m² four-bedroom, two-bathroom house and a 7 m × 14 m two-car shed with a workshop bench wall under one 15° steel gable, wrapped by 3 m-deep verandahs on the north and west (105 m² of decking). The north-facing open living, kitchen and dining room (10 m × 8.4 m) has a raked ceiling rising from 2.7 m to 3.6 m and sliding doors onto the verandah, with a slow-combustion wood heater, a 2.4 m island and a scullery/butler's pantry behind. A farm mudroom links the verandah, the shed and the scullery; the main bedroom has a walk-in robe, ensuite and its own verandah slider; three more bedrooms share the main bathroom off a central hall, plus a laundry with a door out to the clothesline and a 22,500 L rainwater tank.
Learning goal
Design for the Australian climate in the editor: put living areas on the north (sunny) side under a raked ceiling, shade them with deep verandahs drawn as zones with skillion roofs, wrap the verandah around a corner with two roofs, and route the working entry shed → mudroom → scullery → kitchen.
